Sustaining Leadership in Professional Development
Developed for :
High school science professional development providers who already facilitate workshops and other professional development experiences for high school science teachers.
Format:
A two-day conference (six hours per day).
Goal:
To explore a variety of professional development strategies not yet used by participants. This compact conference is a survey of strategies introduced by experienced practitioners.
Content:
Participants will:
- Take stock of their situations as professional development providers.
- Articulate for themselves where they want to go as professional development providers and how they will get there.
- Learn the fundamentals of six professional development strategies:
- Action research
- “Critical Friends” groups
- Lesson study groups
- Mentoring/coaching
- Online PD
- Video for PD
Features:
The conference will provide opportunities for participants to:
- Share practical experiences with professional development providers from diverse communities.
- Assess the critical challenges that they and other professional development providers face when trying to work.
- Converse in small groups with six professional development specialists.
- Receive advice on how to learn to become a practitioner of any of the strategies of interest.
- Consult with peers and specialists as participants identify the next steps they want to take in expanding their skills as professional development providers.
