Preparing High School Science Mentors/Coaches
Developed for:
Single-discipline or multi-discipline teams of high school science teachers interested in becoming mentors or coaches for new teachers and teachers new to science, or for current mentors/coaches who want to improve their skills in that vital area of professional development.
Format:
A year-long institute with associated in-class work.
Goal:
To help teachers develop skills to become mentors or coaches or improve their mentoring/coaching skills.
Content:
Participants will:
- Attend two-day monthly workshops to develop content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and mentoring/coaching skills and strategies.
- Learn, teach, and discuss selected standards-based lessons in their own science field—biology, physics, chemistry, or Earth science—or in a combination of disciplines.
- Learn and apply mentoring/coaching strategies and skills with high school science teachers (mentees) to improve their content knowledge and pedagogical practices.
Features:
Participants will:
- Engage in standards-based, discipline-specific lessons.
- Investigate the pedagogical underpinnings of the lessons.
- Apply the experiences in the institute sessions with their students.
- Discuss lessons as they relate to units and year-long perspective, and articulate their learnings gained by teaching these same lessons.
- Develop mentoring/coaching skills and knowledge through activities such as video observations, role plays, and case studies.
- Learn the structure of pre-observation conferences, observation, and post-observation conferences.
- Gain familiarity with mentoring/coaching tools, such as planning and observation protocols.
