Contextualizing Labs and Investigations
Developed for:
High school teachers of physics and chemistry.
Format:
A two-day workshop (six hours per day).
Goal:
To conduct labs with students within an engaging learning framework, and to strengthen students' perceptions of the relevance of a lab to motivate them to think about what they are doing.
Content:
Participants will learn:
- New physics or chemistry labs.
- A framework for teaching the labs.
- Strategies for talking to students about the labs.
- Strategies for prompting students to talk meaningfully about the labs.
Features:
The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to:
- Take part in four demonstration lessons with labs.
- Perform each lab in the lesson.
- Debrief each lesson for its teaching and learning value.
- Note the framework of the lesson for teaching, learning, and discourse.
- Practice lesson design by reconstructing each lesson.
