Adolescent Literacy Development Online Courses

Literacy Matters Project, Education Development Center, Inc.

The Literacy Matters project offer online courses on a variety of topics related to adolescent literature and content-area literacy. The online courses—which include engaging, hands-on, facilitated activities—are designed to last six weeks. For some, the online courses will be paired with face-to-face introductory and follow-up meetings. Participants who register for the online and face-to-face courses will be able to receive graduate credit or professional development points (PDPs).

Center for Science Education Online Courses

Center for Science Education, Education Development Center, Inc.

CSE is offering online institutes to meet the needs of practicing teachers. The institutes focus on building a community of learners around specific topics through teacher-to-teacher interaction. Emphasis is placed on ideas and teaching strategies that are directly applicable in the classroom. The institutes are asynchronous, allowing teachers to participate at individually selected times and places. The number of hours meets most state requirements for professional credits. Offerings include alternative assessment (middle school) and strategies that promote inquiry thinking (high school). Teachers can also earn graduate credit.

Chemistry.org Professional Development

American Chemical Society


This Web site offers workshops for American Chemical Society curriculum products and short courses related to chemistry designed for professional chemists. The asynchronous and self-paced online short courses are on such topics as safety, chemistry for non-chemists, and lab technologies. The online Web cast short courses are scheduled and synchronous, and address such topics as mass spectra, infrared spectra, and technical writing. Courses are designed for high school teachers.

Connected University

Classroom Connect, a division of Harcourt Education

Connected University offers six-week, four-week, three-week, and self-paced courses for middle and high school teachers. They focus on instructional techniques, integration of Web resources in the classroom, and use of these resources to enhance student learning. The science courses are developed with the American Museum of Natural History. Graduate or continuing education credits are available.

Dragonfly Workshops

Project Dragonfly

Online workshops for teachers of grades 4–8 offer graduate credit from Miami University in earth, life, and physical sciences and focus on processes of inquiry. The workshops start on a specified date and continue for a semester or less. They are asynchronous but assignments are submitted electronically by specified dates during the semester. A chat function among participants is available.

Earth System Science Course for Middle School and High School Teachers

Wheeling Jesuit University, NASA

These 16-week professional development courses were developed at Wheeling Jesuit University with support from NASA Earth Science Enterprise—Education Program. They are held exclusively in an online electronic environment. Participants engage in weekly online discussions around the topic of earth science teaching practices. The courses are facilitated and moderated by members of various academic institutions (University of Minnesota, Louisiana Tech, Texas A & M). A list of the institutions that offer the courses at particular times of year are available on the Web site.

Gender & Diversities Institute

Education Development Center, Inc.

The institute offers short-term workshops, online courses, and just-in-time training for middle school and high school teachers. One past online course addressed ways to increase middle school girls’ interest and participation in math and science and to develop equitable classrooms for girls and boys. Weekend Workshops includes readings, activities, and case studies, combined with facilitated discussion.

Just-in-Time Training presents short, self-directed e-packets on specific topics, skills, or content for classes or workshops. After the course, participants can join an online network of course graduates that offers ongoing professional development, peer exchanges, and a community of support.

Online courses during the academic semester offer graduate credits through Antioch University.

HeinemannU

Heinemann Professional Development Group

HeinemannU offers online courses in science and literacy for middle school. Some courses are self-paced; others are author-moderated. Courses are offered at least twice a year. Courses are worth a minimum of 1.5 CEU/15 clock hours, however, many of them are worth more. Participants must complete all units of the course to earn a certificate. Graduate credit is available.

Heritage Institute Online:
Continuing Education for K–12 Teachers

Heritage Institute and Antioch University

Science courses offered in a distance format are available from The Heritage Institute, a progressive program of continuing education for K–12 teachers operating in the Northwest. All courses are available for Antioch University, continuing education, quarter credits. Courses are self-paced, may started any time and have up to one year to complete.

Jason Academy

The JASON Project, JASON Foundation for Education

JASON Academy science courses are 5 weeks long and offered through several universities. Asynchronous courses are available for middle and high school teachers, but most are directed to teachers of young students. Each course requires 6–10 hours per week (30–50 hours per course), which includes reading online text, exploring course-related Web sites, posting messages on the discussion boards, and preparing and conducting student activities. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and graduate credits are available.

Annenberg/CPB

Professional development courses are offered through satellite channels and video workshops and over the Internet. They require no log-in or registration. Through Internet access, participants can access a continuous stream of science programming. Courses are targeted to specific curricular areas and grade levels. Other workshops are designed for administrators, reformers, and policymakers. Workshops and courses consist of video, print, and Web components that can be used in group sessions or individually. Graduate credits are available and topics vary throughout the year.

National Middle School Association

Knowledge Delivery Systems

Online professional development courses for middle school teachers are offered via live Web casts that last 90 minutes and are offered at alternative start times. Topics address general education issues, such as diversity or classroom management for middle school teachers. Up to 10 minutes are included in each Web cast to handle questions as needed. Continuing education units available.

National Teachers Enhancement Network (NTEN)

Montana State University and NSTA

Courses offered to K–8 teachers support teaching about botany, insects, electricity, motion, ecology, nutrition, soil science, and space science. They are taught in sections of 25 students or fewer. Courses are delivered online from Montana State University-Bozeman using conferencing software. Graduate credits are available from MSU-Bozeman. An NSF grant pays tuition of teachers who participate in course launches.

The Pearson Lesson Lab

Pearson Professional Development

Professional development programs and products focus largely on broad teaching competencies and include master's degree programs and graduate courses as well as professional books and videos for middle and high school teachers. The courses are asynchronous but start and end within a specified time frame. Some include online interaction with the instructor.

Science in Education

TERC/Lesley University

This online science education master's degree program for elementary and middle school educators addresses inquiry-based science pedagogy and Web-based information technologies in daily practice. The 33-credit-hour program comprises an introductory 3-credit-hour course called “Try Science” and five 6-credit-hour modules. Each module focuses on a particular science domain. Online science courses for K–8 teachers, curriculum specialists, and instructional resource persons are also available. Each course is team taught by a scientist and an educator.

Teacher Education Institute

Six-week and 13-week courses categorized by “technology” and “human factor” for middle school and high school teachers are offered. “Technology” courses focus on specific software programs or the integration of technology into instruction. “Human Factor” courses focus on school relations with teachers, parents, and students. Courses are asynchronous but begin and end on specific dates. Graduate credit is available.

Thirteen Adult Education Online: Concept to Classroom

This Web site consists of a menu of workshops for middle and high school teachers on broad topics of educational practice, such as multiple intelligences, inquiry, collaborative learning, and more. Recently, there were no courses specific to science. The online workshops and discussion boards are self-guided. A letter and rubric are available for use by the participant’s administrator in determining the award of professional development credits.
