Meeting Overview

The overarching goal of the 2009 PI meeting is to engage the DR-K12 community in examining how the work of this portfolio can collectively contribute to the knowledge base on teacher learning in STEM education. We look forward to welcoming 300 participants, including NSF grantees, NSF program managers, and guests, at this year's meeting. PIs will attend from the Discovery Research K-12 (DR-K12), Instructional Materials Development (IMD), and Teacher Professional Continuum (TPC) and programs.

This is the last meeting in a series of five supported through a grant to Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC). EDC, along with Abt Associates and Policy Studies Associates, are happy to be able to provide more comprehensive support to DR-K12 grantees in the future through CADRE, the DR-K12 resource network. For more information about CADRE, please read the latest newsletter.

The 2009 DR-K12 PI meeting will include PI-led sessions that focus on project work related to teacher knowledge, practice, and development; curriculum and assessment; research design and methodology and program management. In addition, PI-initiated and facilitated special interest groups will offer grantees the opportunity to gather informally to discuss their work and issues related to topics including, but not limited to, social networking, early childhood STEM education, diverse teaching and learning contexts, language and discourse, algebra.

A number of questions will frame the meeting. These include, but are not limited to:

  • How can this community of researchers add to the national discourse on improving teacher quality?
  • What are we learning about teacher assessment that can inform the redesign of policies and programs to evaluate and reward teachers?
  • How can our research influence teacher-development practices? What have we learned regarding effective practices for recruiting and retaining STEM teachers?
  • How does the changing social and political context affect the responsibilities of content teachers?
