| Bernard Zubrowski is a CSE senior research scientist. Currently, he is the co-principal investigator of the National Infrastructure for After-School Science Investigation project. Recently, he served as the principal investigator of the Explore It! Science Investigations in Out-of-School Programs and Design It! Engineering in After School Programs projects to develop activities for out-of-school programs. He was also the principal investigator of the curriculum program Models in Technology and Science, which resulted in the development of eight extended investigations. In addition, he worked on A World in Motion II, which presents three engineering challenges for middle school students. Bernie has designed eight exhibits for the Boston Children’s Museum; these exhibits traveled to science centers in the United States through a program of the Association of Science and Technology Centers.
In 2005, Bernie’s contributions to the field of science education were recognized by three prestigious organizations. Bernie was honored with the prestigious Faraday Science Communicator Award, sponsored by the Discovery Channel, and bestowed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The award, named for scientist Michael Faraday, is given to “an individual or organization that has inspired and elevated the public’s interest in and appreciation of science.” Bernie also received the New England Achievement Award from the National Engineers Week Committee in Boston. The engineers’ group bestowed the award during their 48th Annual Engineers Week events, commending Bernie for dedicating over 30 years of his professional life to educating students and inspiring teachers about science and engineering. In addition, Bernie was awarded the Science Books & Films Prize for Excellence by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his 17 hands-on children’s books, written over 12 years. Scientists, librarians, science educators, and experts in the field of children’s science books spent months reviewing Bernie’s work, which was proven to meet the highest standards. Bernie received the award at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. | |
